The Trump administration is using tariffs - taxes imposed on imported goods - to achieve all manner of goals, from reducing the trade deficit to creating jobs to generating revenue for the federal government. Will the policy work? This talk took place at Howe Library, in Hanover, NH on 12/9/2025. Douglas Irwin is John French Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College. He is the author of Clashing over Commerce: A History of U.S. Trade Policy (University of Chicago Press, 2017), which The Economist and Foreign Affairs selected as one of their Best Books of the Year. He is president-elect of the Economic History Association (2022-23). He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He worked on trade policy issues while on the staff of President Ronald Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers and later worked in the International Finance Division at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. Before joining Dartmouth, Irwin taught at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business.
What's the Deal With Tariffs?
Join David Millstone, Upper Valley dance caller extraordinaire, for a talk on English country dance through Jane Austen's day. This talk took place via Zoom, hosted by the Howe Library in Hanover, NH on December 2, 2025. David Millstone fell in love with English country dance at Pinewoods Camp in 1987; he has been leading ECD for the past thirty years, including a monthly dance in Norwich, VT. A staff member at dance camps around the country and in Europe, he was president of Country Dance and Song Society for six years. A Visiting Scholar in the Music Department at Dartmouth, he has written and presented extensively on different aspects of country dance history.
Dancing with Jane Austen
Annual Meeting of the Hanover, NH Historical Society followed by a talk on the Literary History of New Hampshire by Dr. Mary Kronenwetter. New Hampshire is home to a rich and diverse literary heritage. Some well-respected New Hampshire authors include Cecelia Thaxter, Robert Frost, Grace Metalious, John Irving, Donald Hall, J.D. Salinger, and Jodi Picoult. Dr. Mary Kronenwetter is a New Hampshire Humanities Scholar and has served as a museum educator at Historic Deerfield, The John Hay Estate at The Fells, and the Enfield Shaker Museum. She holds a doctorate in education and has taught at colleges in the United States, China, and Japan. Mary has authored a New England-based historical novel entitled Pauper Auction. This talk was sponsored by the Hanover Historical Society and the Howe Library and took place on November 12th, 2025 at the Howe Library.
The Literary History of New Hampshire with Dr. Mary Kronenwetter
Ronan Donovan, National Geographic Fellow, John Davis, Rewilding Advocate at Adirondack Council, and Jon Leibowitz, CEO of Northeast Wilderness Trust explore the future of wilderness and rewilding in the Northeast USA. The Q&A is moderated by Terry Spahr, first term member of the New Hampshire State House and member of the Ways and Means committee. This talk took place at the Howe Library in Hanover, NH on November 6, 2025, and was co-sponsored by the Howe Library and the Hanover Conservation Commission. The panel was assembled by John Donovan.
Wild Lands: What They Are, and Present and Future Opportunities for Protection and Restoration
Dr. Adam Schwarz, MD and Dr. Benjamin Boh, DO discuss GLP-1 medications for treating diabetes, obesity, and beyond. They share some of the barriers, complications, and pitfalls of these exceedingly popular medicines, that over the last three years have exploded on the medical market. Dr. Adam Schwarz, MD received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He has over 30 years of experience in the medical field and specializes in internal medicine at the Hanover Continuity Clinic and is an Adjust Assistant Professor in Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine. Dr. Benjamin Boh, DO received his medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Maine and completed his post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Dr. Boh is an endocrinologist at Affirm Endocrinology in Lebanon, NH. This program took place on November 5th, 2025 at the Howe Library.
